So how was it to be nominated for the Grammy?I was in the middle of Brazilian forests with my godmother and her pals and we had just one cell phone. Somehow, my mother got through. So the news was even bigger. I was shocked. What was your experience at the ceremony? Your Manish Arora gown was a hit back home.It was a mammoth experience. My gown was so popular that a newspaper even mentioned my measurements here! There, the foreign news channels were going crazy after my dress and called me the best-dressed person. How disappointed were you on losing out?Things happen so quickly that you don’t get time to feel anything. When they announced the World Music category, I lost my breath for a second but they moved on to another section soon. I was slightly disappointed then, but I’m so happy to be nominated that I can’t feel sad. It was announced that I was the youngest musician ever to be nominated for a Grammy. Were you and your half-sister Norah Jones together for the Grammys? We were together, but during the ceremony we were sitting in different blocks. We had a blast the next day and we both fell sick.Norah didn’t acknowledge Pandit Ravi Shankar when she received the award? She first thanked her record company, the head of her record company who is really close to her, then she thanked her mum and then she paused and thanked her real family. If my English is good, then I think she meant us.How do you deal with so much attention and criticism? I agree that there are so many other wonderful music cassettes and singers but some people get the awards and some don’t. Ours is a strange family but I don’t like the press making so much fuss over it. The media is trying to get dirt out of our family all the time. You are getting the image of a party animal. I am one. Last year I played 70 concerts in different parts of the world. I was touring on a bus and you can’t imagine how tiring it was. So I really need to balance it out.Besides music, you are lending support for many social causes? It’s funny to see how people have adapted to situations and issues here. The other day, only 30 people turned up for a march at Jantar Mantar. I don’t want to associate myself with many causes because then I will lose credibility.Do you have lots of male fans?I receive weird letters and mails and some of them are flattering. A guy from a village proposed marriage, then wrote that he had named his cow after me. In Los Angeles, a guy started showing up at my concerts. One day I saw him outside my school. We got the police involved. Here, guys find me attractive but I am viewed as a musician rather than as a sex bomb. What next, with your music? I would never do something trendy for the heck of it. I’ve been messing around musically a lot for the last three months to see with whom I can work.In India we associate a certain image with classical musicians. Now that you have decided to settle down here are you contemplating a change in your look? I won’t do things for the sake of being Indian. People care too much about clothes here, but it’s time that this country changed.
