MUMBAI, SEPT 14: Calcutta’s Armenian Sports Club defeated a fighting Greater Bombay Police (GBP) 20-8 after being level 3-3 at the half-way stage in the Famous Grouse All-India and South Asia rugby quarter-finals today.

Calcutta Cricket and Football Club (CC&FC) thrashed city-mates Calcutta Police 39-3 in another quarter-final match at the Bombay Gymkhana.

Armenians play Bombay Gymkhana while CC&FC take on Dimbula (Sri Lanka) in the semi-finals tomorrow.

It was against the run of play that Armenians scored a penalty. But GBP equalised within five minutes when Rajesh Tondawalkar converted a penalty. But Tondwalkar’s exit before half-time due to injury made a difference.

Vice-captain Emil Vartazarian kicked two penalties for Armenians while Sepooh Mkertechian and Henrik Terchounian scored a try each.

Herman `Bull’ Balsara, also the coach, led CC&FC from the front. He scored two tries while Tony McLuskie, Nicholas Menezes, Niklesh Jigan and Rioman Jeejboy chipped in with a try each.
