Confirming that ‘‘killings’’ of some ‘‘enemy personnel’’ in Siachen last year had been faked, the Army today said action had been ordered against a Colonel and a Major whileanother Major would face disciplinary action. The incident, first reported in The Hindustan Times today, has become an embarrassment for the Army. The report said bravery awards were being claimed for imagined gallantry —the Army rejected this charge — by video filming soldiers pretending to be dead Pakistani personnel. Those found guilty of ‘‘administrative lapses’’ have been identified as Col K D Singh, commanding the 5/5 Gorkha Rifles at the time of the incident, and Maj Rohit Lama.Disciplinary action has also been ordered against Maj Surinder Singh, who complained against his commanding officer, after a court of inquiry found him guilty of ‘‘exaggerated claims’’.Maj Gen D Summanwar, the Army spokesman, said he was ‘‘not aware’’ of what action had been recommended against Col Singh.Maj Surinder Singh, who had been shifted to Chandigarh, has been attached to 6 Kumaon, presently deployed in the Kashmir Valley. But he has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking trial at a location where he could defend himself. In his petition, which comes up for hearing on May 11, Singh has appealed to the court to quash the order attaching him to 6 Kumaon.Maj Singh was the company commander when the ‘‘faked killings and encounters’’ took place on the Siachen central glacier.Maj Gen Summanwar said that ‘‘certain claims of the officer (Maj Singh) were found exaggerated and the officer was cautioned by the commanding officer. This led to a series of events culminating in the findings of the court of inquiry.’’
