JAIPUR, Dec 17: Curfew was today extended to fresh areas and the Army held flag marches as tension continued in the city for the second day after six persons were killed and 37 injured in police firing on a riotous mob in Shastri Nagar on Monday. The Government succeeded today in convincing the agitating people to remove the bodies of the dead from the hospital mortuary where they had been lying since Monday.

Bodies of at least three of the victims were reportedly taken away by the relatives late in the evening.

Senior officials, who met at the Chief Minister’s office, appeared to have reached an accord late in the evening. It was reported that the Government had agreed to get the encroachments removed from the graveyard, which had led to the flare-up. A compensation of Rs 1 lakh to families of each of the deceased was also announced.

The Congress and other Opposition parties flayed the Bharatiya Janata Party Government today “for showing unconcern towards the minorities” while appeasing sections allied with them.

Madhavrao Scindia, AICC general secretary in charge of Rajasthan, arrived in the city today to assess the situation.

However, no untoward incident was reported today. Two columns of the Army staged flag marches in the particularly tense areas of the walled city and one column was deployed at the Sawai Man Singh Hospital.

Jaipur Collector Vinod Zutshi said that the situation was under control. As a precaution, he said, curfew has been clamped in 11 police station areas, covering the entire walled city apart from Moti Doongri and Jalupura areas.Earlier in the day a crowd of around 5,000 gathered near the hospital, refusing to remove the dead till their demands were met.

Protestors alleged that the police had fired indiscriminately and that the 37 persons admitted in the hospital had bullet injuries. The police did not disclose the number of rounds fired to control the mob but going by the casualties it would run into over a hundred.

The issue is rooted in the dispute over encroachments on a graveyard, a Wakf Board property.

No version was forthcoming from the Government on the Wakf issue. Wakf Minister Rohitashwa Sharma, who also holds the transport portfolio, abused a TV team trying to get his comments.

At the centre of the issue is the role of the controversial Wakf Board Chairman, Shaukat Ansari, who is alleged to have allowed encroachments on Wakf property all over the State. Wakf property in Jaipur is said to run into hundreds of crores and income from it is allegedly diverted for personal or illegitimate use.

The incident has enraged Muslim leaders many of whom arrived from different parts of the State to assess the situation. The lone Minister from the minority community, Nasru Khan, was reported to be unhappy at the happenings, but confined himself to stating that: “Jo hua, bura hua (Whatever happened was unfortunate)”.
