When former UP CM Mayawati told Parliament on Thursday that she was being singled out by CBI, she was probably trying to build a defence for her disproportionate assets, alleged to be over double her known source of income.

It is understood that the agency has nearly completed its investigations and is likely to seek legal opinion and government permission to press charges against Mayawati.

Among Mayawati’s own assets accumulated since she became a public servant in 1994, say senior DoPT officials, is her bank balance which is over Rs 2.51 crore and value of buildings constructed is over Rs 45 crore.

Against this, Mayawati legally earned about Rs 90.67 lakh and spent about Rs 2.43 lakh. Her savings is around Rs 88.24 lakh. The disproportionate asset is about Rs 2.28 crore.

If the assets accumulated by her family members are taken into account, then Mayawati’s alleged disproportionate assets is estimated to be about 526 pc of the known source of income — Rs 10.16 crore. Sources said the value of buildings constructed by her family, including her own, is about Rs 3.81 crore, bank balance is over Rs 7.36 crore and the investment in Hotel Shilton in Mussorie is estimated to be Rs .90 crore.

Officials also claimed that CBI is still verifying some properties which they suspect is either directly or indirectly held by Mayawati and her family. Officials confirmed that it has examined the income and property tax details of the officials suspected to be involved in the Taj Corridor case, including that of the former UP chief secretary. But a case of accumulating disproportionate assets is not being made out against them.

Maya calls meet to review UPA ties

NEW DELHI: On a warpath against the UPA after interrogation by CBI on her disproportionate assets, BSP chief Mayawati has called for a meeting of her party’s national executive on Sunday. The meeting, on the eve of the UPA’s one year at the Centre, will not only review BSP’s support to the Government but will also discuss the ‘‘present political situation and formulate party strategy and action for the future’’ said spokesperson, Sudhir Goel.
