Nine people of a marriage party were killed when the Guwahati-bound Kanchenjunga Express collided with the minibus they were travelling in between Kanke and Suryakamal in Uttar Dinajpur District this evening. Unofficial sources put the toll at 30.A preliminary report from the North Eastern Frontier Railway (NEFR) office in Guwahati said the train rammed the minibus ‘‘carrying 50 passengers of a marriage party at 5.20 this evening’’. ‘‘It occurred at an unmanned level-crossing,’’ NEFR CPRO Lina Sharma said. She said the ‘‘latest figure from the spot put the death toll at nine and the number of injured at 41’’.She said that senior officials have gone to the spot and Railway is taking care of the medical treatment of the injured.She added that passengers in the train were not hurt and that the train has begun the journey towards it destination. West Bengal Police IG (Law & Order) C.K. Mukherjee also put the death toll at nine and the number of injured at 28.
