CALCUTTA, MARCH 4: Arjun Atwal warmed up for the upcoming Indian Open with a superb five-under 65 to take early lead in the Rs. 6-lakh Eastern India Open at the Tollygunge Club here today.

Atwal’s performance put to shade Vijay Kumar and Uttam Singh Mundy’s three-under 67, and two-under cards of Shiv Prakash and Indrajit Bhalotia.

It was an almost etheral display from the Calcuttan, who won the Classic Southern Open in Bangalore early this season. He was seven-under at the end of 16 holes, despite three putting from 15 feet for a bogey on the 212-yard, par-three sixth. With Atal in great form, the course record, which stands under the name of his childhood friend Bhalotia at eight-under 62, he looked like obliterating it.
