NAGPUR, Dec 18: Belinda Clark’s Australian lasses overpowered arch-rivals England with much ease in the last league tie of the Hero Honda women’s cricket World Cup here at the VCA Stadium. On their way to an eight-wicket win, the Australians also saw that they study weaknesses of England, whom they project as their rivals in the title bout.
In English-like weather today, England skipper Karen Smithies won the toss and elected to bat first. Her decision, however, back-fired as Australian leggie Olivia Magno (4-10) and right-arm medium pacer Cathryn Fitzpatrick (3-25) struck regularly to restrict England to 95 off 49.4 overs.
And then opener Clark (40), in company of one-down Michelle Goszki, who remained not out on finely-hit 51, ensured that the match ends in the 27th over.
Brief Scores: England 95 all out in 49.5 overs (B Daniels 23, M Reynerd 23; C Fitzpatrick 3-25, O Magno 4-10 lost to Australia 96-2 in 26.5 overs (B Clark 40, M Goszki 51 n.o ) by eight wickets.
