HYDERABAD, SEPT 28: Top international footballer of yesteryears, Mohammad Azam passed away here yesterday evening after a brief illness. He was 70.
Azam, who retired as Assistant Commissioner of Police, played for the once famous Hyderabad Police for many years and also represented the state several times at the Nationals. A brilliant full back, Azam played in the 1958 Asian Games. He combined beautifully with famous players like late Aziz, Noor Mohammed, Patrick, Laiq and Susi brothers in the fifties in the National championship.
Azam, after retiring as a player, went on to become distinguished FIFA referee and officiated in many internationals. He officiated in the 1974 Asian Games final at Tehran, the only Indian to do so thus far.
Azam is the eldest of a family of footballers who all donned the National colours with distinction. His younger brothers, Md Habeeb (Arjuna Awardee), Md Akbar, Md Jaffar and late Md Mohin made their marks at the state and national levels.
Azam participated in almost all the major football tournaments in the country. His best performance was a double hat-trick against East Bengal in the Rovers Cup at Mumbai. The funeral will take place near his residence in Mehdipatnam.
