It’s time to do the reality check for top US business schools and they should know the direction they are heading to. This was expressed by the Dean of Kellogg School of Management, Dipak C. Jain.

Talking about Paradigm Shift in Management Thinking at a gathering organised by Ficci, Jain said: ‘the focus of business schools should be on leadership and not just creating management thinkers.

Elaborating the role of B-schools, he said that ‘we are not only producing heads of corporations but ambassadors also, serving to the society and community’. Jain also added that ‘corporate America today is facing lot of challenges and time has come for US B-schools to think what business they are in’.

Defining the curriculum of US B-schools he said that ‘prior to 1960, all emphasis was on case studies and period between 1960 to 1999 was the peak of management education where B-schools started getting faculty from basic disciplines. Lot of theories and framework came during this period’. Jain said that topmost US B schools like Kellogg, Wharton, Stanford and Harvard are finding it difficult to manage students’ expectations.

If we look at companies today, first paradigm shift is that they have realised that people are true assets. And, true point of differentiation is to understand the skills of people. Americans lack the quality of listening and this being an important part of negotiations, should be developed by B schools while second most important thing is teaching crisis management.

Time has also come to focus on general management education and teaching students to integrate various disciplines and maintaining close ties with the corporates. While explaining Kellogg’s agenda, Jain said that we are focusing a lot on how to create people who would lead in the future.
