CALCUTTA, May 26: Calcutta’s football giants Mohun Bagan have taken strong exception to Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) allegations that they had sabotaged the World Cup cricket semi-final match at the Eden Gardens last year. They have decided to confront CAB in this matter and will send a letter asking them to prove their charges within seven days.
“If we do not get a reply from them within this period, we will decide on further action,” said Anjan Mitra, the Bagan secretary. He came out with a scathing criticism of CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who had made the allegations of sabotage against Mohun Bagan. Mitra went to the extent of calling Dalmiya “mentally imbalanced” while wondering that how the ICC president-elect could make such baseless charges.
He wanted to know why Dalmiya had disclosed the enquiry committee’s findings when the report is still awaited. He added that Dalmiya would now try to manipulate the report to suit his statement.
Mohun Bagan, an affiliated unit of CAB, is already at war with the Association over creating a pitch in their premises for use during the local cricket league.
Although Mitra did not elaborate on his next course of action, he did not rule out the possibility of going to court against the charges. Mitra claimed that Mohun Bagan have their own jet pumps and do not depend on the PWD water. Refuting allegations that all the Mohun Bagan water taps were running on the day of the semi-final, Mitra said that the enquiry committee never visited the club premises, so how could they know whether water was flowing or not.
He added with a sarcastic laugh that Mohun Bagan ground would have been ankle-deep in water if the taps were indeed running. He alleged that these charges were a part of a campaign to defame the premier club.
DALMIYA CLARIFIES: Dalmiya clarified that he had never accused Mohun Bagan of sabotaging the Wiorld Cup semi-final.
Rather, he said, he had said that the sabotage had occurred at the Mohun Bagan ground. He feels that does not necessary mean that Bagan officials are involved.
Dalmiya feels that he has been misquoted by some of the local dailies.
