Bains is third ethnic Indian mayor in UK

Sucha Singh Bains, who assumed office as the Lord Mayor of Coventry is Britain’s third ethnic Indian mayor.

Bains, who migrated to UK in 1959, is also the first Asian Mayor of Coventry, his office said. He assumed office on May 15, a spokeswoman of the Mayor’s office said.

A member of the Labour Party, Bains has concentrated on issues related to unemployment, immigration and the lack of equal opportunities. Bains came to the UK aged 23 from a village in Punjab, along with his wife, Darshan Kaur.
