
MUMBAI, February 19: G Balaji of Andhra Education Society’s Junior Commerce College won the Bombay Division chess tournament organised by the Bombay Chess Association at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen.
In the last round, Balaji accepted a three-move draw with Vishwas Gadre of BPT. Balaji remained unbeaten in the nine-round Swiss League event with a score of eight and took home Rs 1000.
Top seed Dinesh Bhandarkar of LIC also played a short game of seven moves with Subhash Honmurgi of Voltas and agreed to a draw. Bhandarkar took the second spot with 7.5 points and won Rs 700.
Girish Chandanani settled for a quick draw of five moves with defending champion Ketan Boricha of Lala Lajpatrai College. With the draws, Gadre, Honmurgi, Chandanani and Boricha secured their berths in the eight-member Bombay team. The other two places went to Ajit Kalsekar and Vivek Thoopal.These top eight will represent Bombay Division in the forthcoming Maharashtra State Selection to be held in Kolhapur. The special prizefor best sub-junior went to Nikhil Bhat of St Xavier’s, Fort.
