The high-powered committee appointed by Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav to probe the torching of the Sabarmati Express set the ball rolling today with a three-hour visit to Ground Zero.
The team headed by Justice U.C. Banerjee and comprising technical experts — Bala Kesari (Mechanical), S.K. Dheri (Fire) and S.K. Khanna (Electrical) — inspected S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express to see how the coach was burnt on February 27, 2002. The team spent about 30 minutes inside the coach. Dheri inspected the floor and the vestibule connecting S6 and S5.
The team may not have spent much time at the site of the incident but it sent out strong signals that it meant business. Justice Banerjee even ordered a passenger train to stop a few metres from the spot where the coach had been burnt, and hopped on to the driver’s cabin to see if the driver would have got a good view of the chain of events.
He quizzed officials on a pile of gravel near the A cabin where the coach had been torched. ‘‘Please send details on whether the pile was here when the incident happened,’’ he told them. He also asked them if the driver could have seen all coaches as the train had stopped at a curve.
Later, he told reporters at Godhra railway station that the committee would proceed with the evidence it had; its visit aimed at understanding the ‘‘situation on the ground’’. He admitted that though the three months’ timeframe for completing the probe seemed less. ‘‘We are studying the evidence and all team members will exchange notes prepared during our visit to Godhra when we meet in Delhi. Only then can anything be said,’’ he said.
He did not question the local police. The only policeman who was summoned was Nawab Singh, who had reportedly saved seven passengers from the coach. Justice Banerjee merely complimented him on his courage without posing questions about the carnage.
