
CHANDIGARH, NOV 15: Bansi Lal of Himachal Pradesh established himself one of the leading distance runner by winning gold in the strength sapping 10,000 metres on the second day of the 19th Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) annual sports meet at Basic Training Centre, Bhanu, near here.
Bansi, who opened up a gap 20-metre between the leading bunch in the last 1000-metre, finished the race in 34 minutes 14 seconds to win first place. From the leading pack, Satyapal Singh of Garhwal Sector accelerated in the last lap to win second position in 34:46. Arun Pal Singh of Jammu and Kashmir was distant third in 35:19.
In the other events held, athletes from J&K bagged three out of four gold medals at stake. In the 400-metre hurdles Kundan Singh (J&K) clocked 59.52 to win first place while Surender Singh (HP) and Vishwanathan (Garhwal) were second and third, respectively.
Kundan Singh team mate Om Prakash finished strongly to win first place in 200-metre. He clocked 24.27 seconds. Second place went to Surender Singh of Himachal Pradesh while Vishawanathan of Garhwal was third.
J&K third gold medal came in the triple jump event when John Mathew with a jump of 13.24 metres pushed Devender Singh of Kumaon Sector to second spot who had a jump of 13.07. Bajir Singh of Himachal Pradesh was third.

Hammer throw: 1 Ramesh Kumar (Training Sector), 2 Rattan Chand (HP), 3 Surinder Singh (HP). 400mh: 1 Kundan Singh (J&K), 2 Tejbir Singh (Log Sector), 3 Mukesh Kumar (Garhwal). 200m: 1 Om Praksh (J&K-1), 2 Surender Singh (HP), 3 Vishwanathan (Garhwal). Triple jump: 1 John Mathew (J&K-1), 2 Devender Singh (KMN Sector), 3 Bajir Singh (HP).
Cricketers selected
Four cricketers from Chandigarh have been selected to represent Punjab State in under-16 group in the forthcoming Vijay Merchant Trophy. The players are Gaurav Gupta, Sahil Bhatia, Amandeep Sonkar and Vishwas Bhalla.
These players were selected on the basis of their performance during the Punjab State Inter-District cricket meet.
