As the Gujarat Police rounded up 10 persons and identified Mufti Abu Bashir as the mastermind behind the July 26 blasts in Ahmedabad, it turns out that the name of Bashir and some others who have been picked up first emerged in the interrogation of Mohammed Adnan, a SIMI hardliner arrested along with Safdar Nagori in March.

Adnan alias Hafiz Mullah is a young computer engineer and was a prominent SIMI organiser for south India. He was picked up in the Indore round-up of the SIMI leadership. During his interrogation, sources said, he had revealed the names of many fellow hardliners spread across different states. This included Bashir, who was active in Gujarat.

Adnan’s information corroborated with that of Kamaruddin Nagori, brother of Safdar Nagori, who was in charge of organising training camps. Kamaruddin had revealed that the last significant training camp was held somewhere in Gujarat in January. Now, it turns out that this camp held in Halol, Vadodara, was attended by many of those picked up by the Gujarat Police.

In fact, sources said, all these names and the various camps held in the past year — in Karnataka between April and September, Kerala in October-November, Madhya Pradesh in December and Gujarat in January 2008 — were obtained from the interrogation of Kamaruddin who pointed to the role of Adnan, Shibly Peedical Abdul and his brother Shaduli in helping him organise these camps. Adnan gave out names of several participants in these camps during his questioning.

Adnan was the one who had made first contact with Raziuddin Nasir, a trained LeT operative from Pakistan. Scouting for local support, Raziuddin had met Adnan who, in turn, organised a meeting for him with Nagori in Bhopal. The Gujarat Police, sources said, also relied heavily on Raziuddin’s disclosures during their investigation.

Officials are more than certain that the same group was behind the attacks in Jaipur. The similarities in the explosives apart, Raziuddin had discussed at length with Nagori plans to target tourist spots frequented by foreigners. It’s learnt that certain clues have emerged in the questioning of these 10 persons which may provide some headway in Jaipur probe.
