In yet another Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh, at least three Chhattisgarh Police personnel were killed and two injured on Wednesday after Maoist extremists stormed the Vishrampuri police outpost in Bastar district.

Police sources said cadres from the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army attacked the police outpost at about 8 pm. “The attackers seemed to have stormed the building. Explosives were placed on the pillars of the building and it was blasted,” said a source, adding that the building was still engulfed in fire.

Director General of Police Vishwaranjan said the number of casualties might increase as the exact number of security personnel present in the police station was not yet known. “Police teams from Bastar and neighbouring Kanker district have launched a combing operation in the area. We hope that the situation would become clear by Thursday morning as these teams are yet to reach the police outpost,” the DGP said. The attacking extremist cadres are also believed to have looted wireless sets from the police outpost.

Wednesday’s incident comes after the November 29 attack in which 12, including 10 security personnel, were killed in a mine blast in Murliguda village on Konta-Golapalli road in Dantewara district of Naxal-affected Bastar region.

Chhattisgarh has the worst record in tackling Maoist menace. After the launch of Salwa Judum, Maoists have started targeting both civilians and security forces with at least 700 people, including about 250 security personnel, being killed in Naxal-related violence in Chhattisgarh in the last two years.
