LONDON, MARCH 6: Like chicken tikka masala, the tandoori dish reputedly invented in Britain and now found on menus in Mumbai, lessons in the art of making curry are to be sold back to the land of its birth, India.

The BBC has made a programme on how to make the perfect curry for the subcontinent after lack of domestic cooking shows drove a new cable channel to look abroad for a programme on its viewers’ favourite cuisine, the Sunday Telegraph reported on Sunday.

From May, 15 million Indians will be able to hone their culinary skills by watching Madhur Jaffrey’s Flavours of India, the British-made series. The show will be dubbed in four languages Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali and Punjabi and shown over the next three years on `Broadcast Worldwide’, a channel covering the North of the country that paid more than 700,000 pounds for a selection of British programmes. The report quoting Jonathan Drake, BBC Worldwide’s manager for India, said channels had previously been reliant on imported cookery shows that featured foreign foods.

"People watching the shows often had problems finding the ingredients," he said. "They love the idea of this show and we expect it to be very successful." Pat Chapman, founder of the Curry Club, said many restaurateurs in India were already looking to their British kin for advice on how to run their businesses successfully. He expects Jaffrey’s show, in which she travels through India producing meals that demonstrate local cuisine, to draw a large audience, particularly as its dubbing will make it available to a wider audience than just the English-speaking elite. Madhur Jaffrey is a fairly well-known actress in India owing to her international film career which included parts in Merchant Ivory films Shakespeare Wallah and Cotton Mary.
