Judges also need to learn new things once in a while, so Supreme Court justices went to the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, during the winter break to have some lessons on the latest developments in US, British and international law. However, to delink it from any formal classroom exercise, the event was called a “retreat”. The idea behind this annual event is that the judges also need to come together and reflect on legal issues in an informal setting. This year, besides other experts, a scholar judge from the United States Supreme Court was the star attraction. Meanwhile, the staff of the judges have asked the pay panel for higher salaries on account of the extra work they do till late in the evening. One of them informed the panel that a particular judge was trying to get a world record for writing the maximum judgments, in the process keeping his staff busy till midnight every day.
