MUMBAI, July 24: Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council Chhagan Bhujbal today charged Rajendra Agarwal alias Gupta, the man he was supposed to have “hired” to desecrate the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar last week, with being a “history sheeter and a habitual offender”.

In a letter to Maharashtra Governor Dr P C Alexander, Bhujbal has charged Gupta with making a false affidavit against him and pointed out that he had several cases, including that of theft and atrocities against Dalits, registered against him over the years.

“His antecedents speak for his character and credibility. As such, it is very clear that the bonafides of this person are of criminal nature. He can be used and pressured in every manner under the temptation of withdrawing the cases against him. Hence the affidavit of this habitual offender must be enquired into thoroughly and legal action may please be ordered immediately,” Bhujbal wrote.

Bhujbal, who felt that his life and career were at stake following the allegations, is said to have burned the midnight oil to secure the details. He even despatched his men to Shahada in Dhulia district to secure the details of the cases against Gupta. Bhujbal is leaving for Delhi tomorrow to meet Home Minister Indrajit Gupta.
