NEW DELHI, July 20: The pre-Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament for schools, a prelude to the main Cup, began at the Chhattarsal Stadium here on Monday with almost 35 teams participating in the under-14 and under-17 age groups. In fact, the under-14 age category has been introduced in the tournament for the first time. Winners from each category will move into the main tournament which will be held at the Ambedkar Stadium, prior to the Durand Cup later this year.
On the inaugural day, in the under-14 section, Moti Bagh School defeated St John’s School 3-0.
In under-17 section, Policeline School beat Birla Niketan 5-3 via tie-breaker. In another match in the same section, Prabhu Dayal School beat Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Moti Bagh 2-0.
Four matches, two in each age category, are scheduled for Tuesday at the Chhattarsal Stadium.
The final matches are expected to be held on July 30.
