NEW DELHI, December 20: The Delhi Police made a Rs 1.5-crore seizure of pirated pre-recorded audio compact discs (CDs) last night during a raid in the Rohini area of north-west Delhi.

This is believed to be the biggest-ever haul of pirated audio CDs in the country. Eight persons have been arrested in this connection.

Satyendra Garg, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west district) today said: “We confiscated 29,080 pirated CDs and several thousand inlay cards of new films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Jhoot Bole Kauva Kate and Ghulam, 167 positives of various films, a power supply model, two CD printing machines and 50,000 packing units. But we are yet to locate the factories where the CDs are manufactured.” He added that the factories were located close to Delhi’s borders.

The police said they had arrested an important link in the multi-crore business. “Lalit Khattar is not the kingpin but he is a crucial link. He was operating the logo printing unit in Rohini,” Garg added. The seven others arrested have been identified as Suresh Yadava, Anil, Krishan, Rakesh, Balwant, Manjeet and Niranjan. The DCP said that more seizures and the arrests of some “influential people” were likely in the coming days.

The raid was conducted in the basement of a Rohini house after the police got a tip-off from an anti-piracy group. “Dharmendra Kapoor of the Super Network Copyright Protection Group assisted Inspector Sumer Singh of the Operation Cell in gathering information about the racket. The owner of house no. E-16/117-118 in Sector-8, however, said that he knew nothing about what was going on in the basement of his house as he had rented it out two months ago,” Garg said.

“It seems that the people behind the racket changed houses regularly to avoid detection.”
