July 10: The state legislative council today unanimously passed a bill on amending the Coroners Act whereby the jury will be able to function with a minimum of three members.

While moving the resolution, Minister of state for home Gajanan Kirtikar said originally the jury had to have a minimum of five members to be able to function. However, frequent absenteeism has resulted in difficulties in conducting the Coroner’s Court. Hence, it was thought wise to reduce the number of minimum members in the jury to three. Kirtikar said due note had been made of the member’s suggestion to update the laws.
