May 25: A meeting was organised by the `Surbharati-Somaiya Kendram' to congratulate the state government for passing a bill in the assembly unanimously to form a `Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit Vishwavidyalay', (a proposed Sanskrit University which is to be built at the religious town of Ramtek near Nagpur).The meeting was held at Marathi Patrakar Sangh, Azad Maidan on Saturday and attended by distinguished Sanskrit teachers.Addressing the meeting state education minister Dattatraya Rane said, ``Sanskrit should be taught to all school-going children so that they can understand our culture.'' He thanked all the members of the assembly belonging to different parties for supporting the bill. Speaking on the occasion, noted educationist and industrialist, Shantilal Somaiya said, ``Generally we organise meetings to criticise the government or make some demand but this is a rare occasion when we have assembled to thank the state government.'' He added that Sanskrit is the only language which can preserve and cherish the identity of Indians irrespective of their caste and languages because of its association with `'Bharat" since ancient times..``Alongwith the rapid strides that the present generation is making technologically it is essential that we stay in touch with our roots too. Sanskrit offers an opportunity to do this,'' opined Somaiya.
