December 6: Kochi — Apollo Tyres Limited, one of the biggest private sector undertakings in Kerala, declared a lockout in its Perambra factory from today following indefinite strike by a section of the workmen.

According to a press release from the Apollo Tyres, workmen in the electrical, electronics, winding shop and instrumentation sections in the factory have resorted to an `illegal lightning strike’ without notice since Nov 30. Trouble started when a workman was suspended on disciplinary grounds, it said.

According to Vinod G Motwani, managing director, the wall tiles plant at Alibag is fully automated and has state-of-the-art equipment from renowned company of Italy. This plant is geared to manufacture up 24,000 tonnes of ceramic wall tiles per annum.The company produces tiles in a size of 200 x 300 mm and has plans to launch tiles in other sizes too.
