Rupee at 7 month high

MUMBAI — The rupee closed at seven-month high of Rs 35.69/70 against the dollar at the inter-bank foreign exchange market here on Thursday. The RBI allowed the rupee to pierce the Rs 35.70 barrier and close higher on Thursday without any intervention. The apex bank did not intervene in the market despite the rupee piercing the psychological barrier of Rs 35.70. This is the first time in the past five trading days that the apex bank did not intervene although the rupee breached the Rs 35.70 barrier.

MUMBAI — Smithkline Beecham Consumer Healthcare Ltd has announced an interim dividend of 20 per cent on its paid-up equity capital of Rs 28.36 crore at a board meeting on Thursday.Net profit of the company has gone up 19.3 per cent from that achieved in the last corresponding period. The turnover was up Rs 56.5 crore to Rs 265.5 crore. Net profit for the first half year stood at Rs 25.2 crore while gross profit was Rs 43.71 cr.

Gold rises

MUMBAI — Gold prices shot up on the bullion market here today on paucity of stocks due to restricted arrival coupled with better overseas advices. On the other hand, silver, declined further steeply due to poor industrial buying.

Standard gold, after a weak start at Rs.4445, rallied to close at Rs 4505, showing a noteable gain of Rs.55 from the previous close of Rs 4450. 22-carat gold was also nominally quoted higher at Rs 4170 from Rs 4115 on tuesday. Ten-tola gold bar of .999 purity rallied by Rs 700 at Rs 52700. Raw silver of .916 fineness lost Rs 55 at Rs 6115 compared to Rs 6170 on Tuesday.
