The BJP seems to have got entangled in a time warp. First it was the Jinnah controversy that took us more than half a century back. It then highlighted the excesses of emergency, which happened close to three decades ago. It is time that the BJP comes back to the present times since there is a surfeit of issues that they can tackle to get back the position as the pre-eminent party of opposition.

Left not right

The Left accuses the West of imperialism, but history shows that all the erstwhile and present communist countries were nothing but the imperialism of brutal dictators under the guise of the “rule of the proletariat” (‘Foreign non-policy’, IE, July 11). Many of them had their bathrooms fitted with gold while the “proletariat” starved.

Bulldog’s example

Ashok Malik has pointed out that “the violation of London was not reduced to statistics” — very true indeed (‘Salute the Bulldog’, IE, July 9). The annunciation of every calamity in our country is always heralded by a very poor approximation of the death toll and an even more vague assertion of the injured. This has always added tremendously to lowering the morale of the already panicky masses. Therefore, it is not surprising that while a city like London took less than a day to get itself back on its feet after the terror attack, India remains caught in a lingering low for months together.

Exemplary article. Each time a calamity occurs in India, the triviality of our politicians are exposed. It is high time for the media too to take a cue from the foreign media on how to react to national calamities. When will Indians grow up?

Surprise element

The invaluable lesson to be learnt from the foiled terrorist attack on Ayodhya should not be lost on the people responsible for our nation’s security. What saved the day was that the terrorists did not know or anticipate that there would be armed security personnel in the generator room. And it is those security men who thwarted the advancing terrorists and later played a key role in repulsing their attack. The point is that at sensitive places across India, be they temples, army camps or even bank branches, security personnel should be inconspicuous.

Surendra Sundararajan Baroda

Saint Sonia?

Sonia’s sainthood is bared. What one could can conclude from this action by RGF to vet the output of its scholars is Sonia Gandhi’s intolerance of anything that she does not like (‘Gujarat report: Sonia plays editor, author says I quit’ (IE, July 9). What is wrong if Narendra Modi used the RGF report to reflect the good scores his state had earned?

Krisna Delhi

The resignation of Dr Bibek Debroy is indeed unfortunate. Sonia Gandhi should not show her political clout in every field. One cannot alter facts or refuse to face the truth.
