Diverging from the party line that it was opposed to trifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir, BJP general secretary and spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said today that ‘‘the BJP is not opposed to a trifurcation of the state’’.
He said BJP ‘‘favours establishment of regional development councils for Jammu and Ladakh regions in view of complaints that successive National Conference governments have discriminated against the people in matters of development.
Naqvi said that while BJP is not opposed to the trifurcation, ‘‘we feel, it is not appropriate at the moment to make this demand. However, we don’t consider it anti-national.’’
The Jammu State Morcha, an RSS-supported body is contesting the state Assembly polls on the trifurcation-plank. It seeks a statehood for Jammu and UT status for Ladakh. The BJP, which has forged an electoral alliance with it, has opposed the demand with Dy PM Advani saying it would strengthen Pakistan’s case.
