A fresh chapter is set to be added to the uneasy BJP-BSP relationship in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday as BJP state president Vinay Katiyar takes his legislators for a meeting with the central leadership on the coming Assembly elections.

While officially, the largest ever delegation of UP BJP legislators to the high command will discuss the party’s performance in the alliance and how to strengthen it, many MLAs admitted to The Indian Express that they would try to wake up the party leadership about the dangers of continuing with Mayawati.

‘‘There is a general impression among the masses that the government is of the BSP, and all wrongs are adding to our account while good things are accruing to the BSP,’’ pointed out a legislator.

The party leaders unhappy with Mayawati’s functioning feel open talk with the high command is their best option now as previous complaints against her have backfired. At the meeting, the legislators would be free to speak their minds.

Katiyar, however, reiterated that the meeting was about the coming elections and how the BJP should start preparations, as other parties have already got off the ground. ‘‘The pros and cons of the coalition will be weighed during the meeting,’’ he added, ‘‘but the Mayawati government will last its full term.’’

Katiyar said they were also trying to get a meeting organised with PM A.B. Vajpayee. Right now the legislators are supposed to meet Deputy PM L.K. Advani and party president M. Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi on April 1.

Katiyar, who is believed to have made the meeting possible, said it would last three-four hours and the state leaders would make the high command understand where the party stands in UP. The party has also charted out a programme under which it will hold assembly segment-wise special sessions, in which workers to the booth level will be invited, from April 6 to 20.

‘‘Our membership has gone up from 18 lakh to 24 lakh this year and we will continue going for mass- and worker-oriented programmes,’’ Katiyar said.
