Regaining control over its traditional belt and making the rout of the BJP complete, the ruling Congress today bagged all the three segments of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Bharmaur, results for which were declared today. The Congress gain was BJP loss: two directly and one through its earlier alliance partner, Sukh Ram’s Himachal Vikas Congress.
The three seats had gone to the polls on June 8. Polling in the three constituencies could not be held because of snowfall in February when the rest of the state went to the polls.
In Kinnaur, Congress candidate Jagat Singh defeated his nearest rival Tejwant Singh Negi of BJP by a margin of 7,406 votes. In Bharmaur, former Congress MLA Thakur Singh Bharmauri defeated his nearest rival and sitting BJP MLA Tulsi Ram, by a margin of 9,692 votes. In Lahaul-Spiti, Raghbir Singh of Congress bagged the seat defeating his nearest rival Ram Lal Markandey of HVC by a margin of 4,768 votes. He polled 9,458 votes against Markandey’s 4,690.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has thanked the people of the tribal belt for showing solidarity with his party. He has described this as a vote for the progressive and far-sighted policies of the Congress led by its national president Sonia Gandhi. It is also a vote for the Congress crusade against corruption, he said.
