MUMBAI, JUNE 19: With no indications of an understanding between the ruling coalition partners on the holding of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state, BJP leaders are planning to thrash out the issue in meetings with Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray over the next couple of weeks.
BJP leader and Deputy Chief Gopinath Munde is to call on the Sena chief on Monday to “convince him” of the need to hold both polls together. Senior leader Pramod Mahajan is expected to meet him next week.
Recent statements from both parties have brought the differences — which emerged as soon as Parliament was dissolved and fresh polls announced back into focus.
Munde his week reiterated his party’s long-held position favouring simultaneous polls. But in an interview to Saamna today, on the eve of the 33rd foundation day of the Shiv Sena, Thackeray reaffirmed his opposition to the idea.
“We have been given a mandate for five years,” he told the Sena mouthpiece. “Under such circumstances, it will be foolishness toseek early polls.”
As for Munde’s statement, Thackeray said he had specifically instructed Chief Minister Narayan Rane to see that the alliance did not opt for simultaneous polls.
“We are prepared to face the elections anytime. But since we have been democratically elected for five years, there is no need to hold elections before schedule.”
Reacting to Thackeray’s interview, Munde said he was still in favour of holding simultaneous polls. “I am firm on my decision. In view of the changed political situation in the country and particularly in Maharashtra, we should go in for simultaneous polls,” he said.
“The issue of holding simultaneous elections will also be placed before the Coordination Committee of the two parties. The decision of the committee will be binding on both the alliance partners,” Munde added. A senior BJP minister said Pramod Mahajan will meet Thackeray next week to try and get him round to the BJP’s point of view.
