The BJP has said it will support any move by the Government to legislate 33 per cent reservation for women in legislative bodies. The party had on Friday demanded that political parties should be forced to reserve 33 per cent of seats for women candidates instead of waiting endlessly for consensus on reservation. Clarifying its statement, the party on Saturday said it had “not dropped” the demand for women’s quota in elected bodies and favoured the Election Commission’s proposal for reservation at the party-level only because there was no consensus on the Women’s Reservation Bill. “There should not be any misunderstanding. We have not softened or changed our stand. We want reservation for women and we will support the (Women’s Reservation) Bill if Sonia Gandhi and the UPA manage to evolve a consensus on it,” Sushma Swaraj said.BJP president Rajnath Singh also made it clear that the party was ready to support any proposal that provided 33 per cent reservation for women.
