CHANDIGARH, May 23: The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) has decided to gherao the ports at Mumbai and Kandla from June 1 to prevent the entry of imported wheat into the country, following reports that this wheat contained dangerous weeds.

Announcing this yesterday, BKU president Bhupinder Singh Mann expressed concern over the government move to despatch contaminated and inferior wheat for human consumption to southern states. Recalling that the BKU had warned the government against unnecessary import of foodgrains, Mann said the decision of Union Agriculture Minister Chaturanan Mishra to go ahead with the imports at the cost of human lives needed to be probed.

He also urged the government to take action against officials who had failed to quarantine the imported grains before distribution.
