The agitation by the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) farmers today spilled beyond Jind district into Hisar and Rohtak with the district administration literally ceding control over the villages of Kandela, Dalamwala, Gulkani, Ramra and Shahpur. The police, meanwhile, have claimed that only one person died yesterday due to ‘injuries from a blunt weapon’.

The farmers today laid siege to the major roads leading to the cities Jind, Hisar and Rohtak. Jind was virtually cut off from three sides even as the police removed obstructions on a road at Lohcheb village situated along the Jind-Panipat Highway. The police fired in the air to disperse the mob in the morning and deployed heavy force to keep farmers away from the scene. The Jind police claimed to have arrested six farmers in connection with yesterday’s violence.

Said BKU activist Dharmbir Hooda: ‘‘No one from the administration would be allowed to enter the village, come what may. We lost two men but it seems the agitation is demanding more blood, which we are ready to shed.’’ Sporadic incidents of police firing and stone pelting were reported from Jind, Hisar and Rohtak. Jind Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar Rao claimed only one person died last night due to injuries from a blunt weapon while Hooda claimed two died in the firing yesterday.
