New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals at the Wanderers Stadium, and eventually built its total around 62 off 42 balls by Ross Taylor. He hit three 6s and three 4s in a 70-run partnership with Fulton (25) for the third wicket, and shared a stand of 51 with Jacob Oram for the sixth wicket.

Oram scored an undefeated 33 off 20 balls at the tail of the innings, while Sri Lanka’s bowlers were all economical, except for Gayan Wijekoon who conceded 50 runs in four overs with one wicket.

Dilhara Fernando was Sri Lanka’s best bowler with 2-31. Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga started the run chase at a frantic pace, reaching their half-century partnership in 28 balls, and scoring 82 for the first wicket.

Tharanga fell in the eighth over for 37 off 25 balls after Vettori had brought himself on in an attempt to slow the scoring.
