The non-telecast of the Bangladesh Test series has finally got the Board’s goat, it seems. Board secretary Niranjan Shah today passed the buck, saying the Board was “helpless”, it seems that a Nimbus-Star partnership has yet to get the best distribution worked out, resulting in ‘blackouts’.
“Nimbus has got the rights from the Bangladesh Cricket Board. We cannot interfere. Nimbus has to try and reach out to the viewers. Whenever we give rights to anyone for matches in India, we clearly mention that the feed has to be shared with Doordarshan. The clause is a part of the contract. But in this case, we are helpless,” said Shah. Hence the Chittagong Test remains out of reach of many.
Interestingly, the national broadcaster is beaming live Pakistan-Sri Lanka ODI series.
When contacted, Nimbus Communications Ltd executive chairman Harish Thawani, however, refused to comment on its policies to share feed with Doordarshan.
Nimbus has given the responsibility of Neo Sports’ distribution to Star TV. Paritosh Joshi, president of Star TV’s advertising sales and distribution division, said: “There are standard terms which are well known to the market place. Those terms are non-negotiable. We market our channels also, along with bouquets of third party. On an aggregate, we enjoy highest viewership among the channels distributed by cable operators. Neo Sports is a new channel, so obviously it will take time to reach out to a larger viewership. I am sure with time, it will be able to penetrate to all parts of the country.”
Shah said: “Doordarshan is to be blamed. They should have prepared an understanding with the broadcaster Neo Sports.”
