South Africa’s Nicky Boje suffered a fracture of his left tibia and also sustained ruptured medial ligament damage in his ankle here yesterday. Boje, on as a substitute for Martin van Jaarsveld, turned his ankle while fielding during the triangular series one-day international against England, a match South Africa eventually lost by four wickets.

He immediately signalled for assistance and was carried from the field before being taken to hospital. South Africa spokesman Gerald de Kock said the left-arm spinner would need an operation, probably as early as today.

Boje, 30, lost his place in the team to unorthodox left-arm spinner Paul Adams on Saturday for the nine-wicket series win over Zimbabwe at Cardiff.

He was not included in the squad for South Africa’s five Test match series against England which starts later this month at Edgbaston.
