NEW DELHI, APRIL 8: A day after the Delhi Police blew the lid on the biggest controversy ever to hit cricket, they interrogated Krishan Kumar, a former Bollywood actor and brother of the late music baron, Gulshan Kumar, in connection with the case.
He is currently admitted to a local hospital and is said to have been instrumental in the entire “match-fixing racket” during the recent India-South Africa series.
Sources reveal that Kumar is suspected to have raised funds for paying advance money for match-fixing and arranging the transfer of funds through hawala transactions. He was questioned late this evening, sources said. However, police officials refused to elaborate.
The Delhi Police have sought cooperation of various police forces all over the country and the Interpol wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation. An alert has also been sounded at all international airports to look out for Sanjeev Chawla, the London-based bookie.
Greater Kailash businessman Rajesh Kalra was interrogated the whole night in the crime branch office in R K Puram and Sanjeev Chawla’s family in Noida today. Kalra told the police that he had met Chawla in London last year in connection with his garments business and made friends with him. Chawla reportedly runs a garments shop in London’s Oxford Street. He claimed that he had never met Hansie Cronje and that the money paid to cricketers for match-fixing was around $ 4lakh.
The police today sent faxes to various other police forces including Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Chennai, sources revealed. It was added that the police have asked for details on various persons suspected of being involved in fixing the matches of the recent one-day series.
Police sources today began investigations on the link between Kalra and Krishan Kumar. Sources say that they were seen regularly at the gym in ParkRoyale, a south Delhi five-star hotel.
Two names that came up during the probe are of Gagan Deep and cricketer Manoj Prabhakar, who blew the whistle on match fixing for the first time. They were also reportedly seen with Kumar and Kalra.
Sources in the hotel confirmed to The Indian Express that the four were sometimes seen together. Said a ParkRoyale source: “Manoj Prabhakar was a member of the hotel’s health club till last month. His membership expired on March 5. He has not contacted us for renewal thereafter. Both Kishan Kumar and Gagan Deep came over to the health club as visitors.”
According to a member of the club, the four would work out together. “As both Manoj Prabhakar and Kishan Kumar’s are known faces, one got to notice them. But there was nothing extraordinary.”
When contacted for comments, Manoj Prabhakar said: “I dont know them. I have no connections with them. Keep me out of this.”
