Hobart (Australia), Nov 18: Steve Waugh’s confidence in his Australian bowlers yielded dividends as Pakistan were dismissed for 222 on the opening day of the second cricket Test at Bellerive Oval today.

Just like he did in the Brisbane Test, the Australian skipper backed his bowlers in sending Pakistan into bat and was rewarded when the tourists crumbled to be all out off 72.5 overs, some 40 minutes after tea.

In reply, Australia were away to a handy start and negotiated 16 overs in chilly conditions to be 29 without loss at the close of an eventful first day’s play in the three-Test series.

Michael Slater, who negotiated a couple of hair-raising moments facing tearaway Shoaib Akhtar bowling downwind, was not out 16 with Greg Blewett on nine.

Australia are one-up in the series after cruising home to a 10-wicket victory in the opening Test at the Gabba earlier this month.

Once Glenn McGrath’s opening six-over spell netted him two wickets for 250 Test career dismissals, Australia were in command of the first day.

Opener Mohammad Wasim fell nine runs short of his third Test century as the only Pakistani batsman to score above 30.

Wasim, dropped by McGrath in a difficult chance at mid-on which led to his 50, was out to a spectacular acrobatic catch by wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist when on 91. He played a thick edge to a loose Scott Muller delivery and Gilchrist gloved the catch swan-diving across Shane Warne at first slip.

Only skipper Wasim Akram (29) and Azhar Mahmood (27) made any worthwhile contribution, but it was not the innings the tourists wanted in a push to level the series here with the Perth Test to play later this month.

Muller, preferred to hometown bowler Colin Miller in the starting XI, had some luck in finishing with 3-68 off 12 overs.

The Queensland paceman had Inzamam-ul-Haq playing on for 12, while Moin Khan spooned a catch to McGrath in a miscued leg-side shot.

Warne cleaned up the lower order, snaring 3-45 off 16 overs after his opening four overs went for 26 as Wasim cut loose. The champion leg-spinner now has 337 wickets in his 77th Test.

Pakistan went to lunch at 110 for three, but they lost any hope of a sizeable first innings total when three wickets fell in a 40-minute period into the afternoon session to slump to 153 for six.

McGrath produced his best bowling of the series, bowling downwind, to have Pakistan in early strife.

McGrath found edges off the bat to remove opener Saeed Anwar and Ijaz Ahmed inside the first 40 minutes.

Anwar, who scored a century in the 10-wicket loss at Brisbane, lasted 13 balls before he edged high to Warne at first slip for a duck. Ijaz’s run of low Test scores continued when he was out for six caught at gully by Slater.

McGrath’s lively first spell yielded 2-6 off nine overs with six maidens.

Forgotten paceman

HOBART: Strike bowler Glenn McGrath overtook Richie Benaud to become the fourth most successful Australian Test cricket bowler of all time, but his team-mates forgot to congratulate him.

“We just found out a little while ago,” Waugh said of McGrath’s milestone after stumps. “We forgot to congratulate him. It’s a tremendous effort, he’s been a great bowler for Australia at a good strike rate of about 4-5 wickets a game.”

“I still don’t think he’s bowling as well as he can but he still doesn’t let you down, he’s always there at 100 per cent and I’m glad we’ve got him.”

With 250 Test wickets only Dennis Lillee (355), Shane Warne (337) and Craig McDermott (291) are above McGrath as leading Australian wicket-takers.

“To pass Richie (Benaud) is quite a big buzz because he is such a big name in the sport,” McGrath said.
