South African Ernie Els made the first significant move in the U.S. Open final round on Sunday while compatriot and twice champion Retief Goosen prepared for a late teeoff.
Els, winner of the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997, birdied the first and fourth in bright sunshine at Pinehurst’s No.2 course and stayed at two under for the day after seven holes.
That left the world No.3 at seven over for the tournament, but 10 strokes adrift of Goosen’s overnight lead.
Of the other early starters, Americans Fred Couples and Bob Estes were both one under for the round, Couples after nine holes and Estes after six.
Phil Mickelson made a good start with a birdie at the par-four third but slipped back by bogeying the fifth to lie at eight over.
Leader in the clubhouse was Australia’s Steve Elkington. (Reuters)
