The process to implement National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of Information And Communication Technology in the Indian judiciary has been taken a step further with award of contract to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limted (BSNL) for providing broadband connectivity to district and subordinate courts. The policy formulated by the E Committee of the Supreme Court and inaugurated by former President A P J Abdul Kalam on July 9 will be implemented in three phases within a period of five years. Creation of computer rooms at all court complexes across the country with Internet facility, laptops for judicial officers, training, upgradation of ICT infrastructure in the high courts and Supreme Court and extension of computer facility at judges’ chambers are proposed in the first phase. Judicial ofiicers at 2,500 court locations across the country have already been provided with laptops and they can now access court judgments through Internet connectivity. To link district courts with the high courts and Supreme Court on a real time basis, video conferencing facilities will be also provided at district headquarters. The plan also envisages provision of Wireless Internet Facility at the SC and high courts.The Action Plan will be implemented jointly by the E Committee and National Informatics Center , which will provide technical support.
