In a daring attempt, a few burglars tried to enter the locker room of a nationalised bank by tunnelling their way into it from an adjacent vacant plot. However, their bid to rob the bank was foiled as the bank authorities detected the secret tunnel well on time. The incident occurred at the Kamla Nagar branch of Canara Bank under New Agra police station. On Monday, when assistant general manager Balbeer Singh reopened the bank after Diwali holidays, he noticed some disturbance under a carpet in the locker room. When his staff removed the carpet, they found a secret tunnel. The tunnel was broad enough to allow a man to enter the locker room. He informed the police and senior officials. The tunnel was dug from a low-lying vacant plot behind the bank. The plot belongs to Ramesh Kumar, a cloth merchant. Digging of earth was being carried out in his plot for construction of the building basement. The burglars reportedly tried to take advantage of a pit dug in the plot. They were probably tunnelling their way for the past several days and were poised for robbery before the authorities detected the tunnel. SP, City, Prem Narayan and inspector New Agra D I Sudhir inspected the bank. Prem Narayan told The Indian Express that burglars were aware of the internal structure of the bank and that’s why they accurately reached the locker room.
