Bus set ablaze in Madurai

MADURAI, Oct 8: A tamil Nadu state transport bus plying between Madurai and Dindigul was reportedly intercepted near Fatima College here during the wee hours of this morning, by a group of miscreants and set on fire. The group were believed to have committed the act, incensed over operating of bus services, quite unaware that the bandh earlier announced by the Mukkalathor Kootamaippu was called off on Wednesday. Six persons were arrested in this connection.

Police said the group, after boarding the bus, asked the 15 passengers to vacate after intimidating and injuring the bus driver Kanniah and conductor Manoharan. Later, they too had reportedly alighted and lobbed petrol bombs at the bus, completely gutting it. The extent of damage was estimated at Rs 8 lakh, even as fire service personnel rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire, police said.

Sellur Police who registered a case have nabbed six persons and are interrogating them. The arrested are Saravanan (27), Thennarasu (22), Alagarsamy (24) andThavamani (30) belonging to Vilangudi, Chinnathambi (29) of Pethaniapuram and Stalin (22) of Arapalayam.
