Defence Minister and NDA convenor George Fernandes called on MDMK general secretary Vaiko in Chennai on Friday. The minister stopped over around 1.30 am on his way to Port Blair. Fernandes was received at the airport by Vaiko’s son, Durai Vaiyapuri. The visit was the first by an NDA leader after the MDMK quit the coalition. Vaiko presented a shawl to Fernandes at the end of the meeting that lasted more than two hours. Fernandes was a frequent visitor at the Vellore Jail when Vaiko was lodged there.
