The Airports Authority of India (AAI) board will soon be weighed down by more civil servants than aviation experts—a prospect that the AAI abhors. While part-time board member Kanu Gohain, who heads the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, is already on his way out and will be replaced by IAS official Nasim Zaidi, there is a buzz that soon-to-retire member (Personnel & Administration) H S Bains will also be replaced by an IAS officer in September end. The move will bring a quartet of IAS officers into the eight-member board. Air India CMD Raghu Menon and Civil Aviation Joint Secretary K N Srivastava are the other IAS members, while S P Mehra from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security is from the IPS. That gives the Central services a 5-3 edge over technical experts in the AAI board.
