MUMBAI, July 23: A hat-trick by Central Bank of India’s (CBI) Caetano Fernandes lit up a hoplessly one-sided Gulf Oil Senior Division WIFA football match against Bombay Customs at the Cooperage, today.

After a goalless first-half, Caetano struck all three of his side’s goals to flummox the Customs’ citadel which enjoyed a charmed life in the first-half.All three were quality goals and Caetano must acknowledge the spadework done by right-winger Melvin Vaz to set up the first two.

After barely five minutes into the second-half, Vaz’s centre gave Caetano ample time and space to pick his target before finding the far corner of Bhupal Bisht’s goal.

Caetano, the predator, was again at work in the 67th minute after Vaz’s hardwork continued unflaggingly. A chip into the area and a volley gave a stranded Bisht no chance.

Jameel Ansari’s chipped to Caetano in the 78th minute, paving way to the third goal. The bank striker on song, slotted in on the run to complete Customs’ misery.

Customs were subdued with little or no sight of the CBI goal save two feeble attempts by Carlton and Fahim which Jerome Ghanekar saved without blinking an eyelid.

Ghanekar’s opposite number Bisht, overworked in the first-half, might have scarcely believed the blank scoreline at the interval.

As perhaps the bank bench which agonised repeatedly as Caetano, Vaz, Harinder Mal and Girish Nair went close in the first session.

Even an indirect free-kick in the box after Bisht overstepped came to naught seconds before the interval and the trend looked likely to continue after the change of ends.

Mal failed within seconds of the restart after Caetano passed from the left wing. Perhaps Caetano decided to take matters into his own hands and struck minutes later that opened the floodgates for a rout.

Dena Bank beat Catholic Gymkhana 3-1 in a preceding First Division match.
