Canada reached 199 all out against Kenya in Group C’s opening World Cup match on Wednesday, with a free-scoring start pulled in by a frugal spin attack.

Geoff Barnett topscored with 41 off 50 balls, opening the batting by belting balls around the Beausejour Cricket Stadium and taking advantage of the fast outfield. He hit nine boundaries — five of them in the 14th over off Nehemiah Odhiambo.

Canada got 20 runs off that over, but Barnett was gone two balls later, lofting a catch to Tanmay Mishra at deep midwicket as he went for another boundary. The introduction of spinners Hiren Varaiya and Jimmy Kamande slowed Canada’s run-rate and it never really regained momentum after Barnett’s departure.

Varaiya returned 1-19, including three maidens. Kamande took 2-25 and captain Steve Tikolo finished with 2-34. Barnett and Abdool Samad made a confident start after Kenya won the toss and sent Canada in to bat.

Barnett hit successive boundaries off Peter Ongondo in the 10th over, to bring Canada past 40. Samad (15) was out four balls later, with Tikolo taking a low catch at backward point off Thomas Odoyo, during the second powerplay. In five overs after the 20th over, Canada only made nine runs.

Ahsif Mulla hit the only six of the innings, lofting it onto the stadium roof past midwicket. Two balls later, he was out for 25. The final four wickets fell for 24 runs.
