PATNA, February 24: Samajwadi Party candidate from Motihari and sitting MLA Devendra Dubey and his four associates were gunned down in east Champaran district of Bihar late last night.

Dubey and the four men identified as Amrendra Gupta, Bhushan Tiwari, Amar Singh and Jaichand were killed on the spot.

Bihar Energy Minister, Brij Bihari Prasad, whose wife Rama Devi is Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate for Motihari, Prasad’s brother, Shyam Bihari Prasad and RJD activists, Kamakhaya Narayan Singh, Vinod Singh, and Tej Bahadur Singh have been named accused in the case, police said.

The Armada jeep, in which the five were travelling was ambushed by the marauders at Bariarpur village near Sangrampur. Party sources said that Dubey was on his way to attend a function organised by his supporters at a nearby village to celebrate his “victory”, though the elections were held only a day earlier.

Dubey, having a criminal record, was a Samata Party legislator before joining the Samajwadi Party just on the eve of theelections. Both Dubey and Brij Bihari were sworn enemies and have had several confrontations in the past.
