With Lok Sabha polls round the corner, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh today sought to put the onus on the Centre for resolving the longstanding dispute over the SYL (Sutlej-Yamuna Link) Canal with Haryana.
Notwithstanding the Supreme Court ruling that Punjab should complete the SYL canal first for Haryana to get water, Amarinder today asked Union Law Minister Arun Jaitley to intervene. In their half-an-hour meeting, Amarinder demanded the scrapping of Eradi Commission, which had fixed the quantum of water to be released to Haryana, and sought that a fresh panel be set up. Also under the pretext of ‘‘canvassing support of Central leaders for Punjab’s right over her waters’’, Amarinder would now be able to spend a lot more time in the Capital. He was avoiding frequent forays to Delhi after Congressmen had staged a revolt in Punjab.
