VADODARA, Dec 21: In a case of cross-allegations, a physician was reportedly assaulted by a group of four women at Padra on Saturday, but a case has been lodged against him for assault by one of the women. The Indian Medical Association has condemned the attack on the doctor.
According to the Padra police, Navin Shah, a practicing physician of the town, allegedly assaulted Vilasben Patel, whose brother had recently died after a paralytic attack. The complainant told the police that the doctor had called her to his clinic on Saturday and demanded payment of his bills. When she sought an explanation of his bills, the doctor allegedly hit her with his stethoscope. A case under Section 323 and 114 IPC was registered against the doctor, police said.
The doctor, who is undergoing treatment at the S S G Hospital, alleged in his report with the hospital police that he was assaulted by a group of four women, one of whom had lost a family member recently. The doctor alleged that the women held him responsible for the death, though he was not to blame.IMA office-holders condemned the attack and pointed to the increasing number of such cases against medical professionals throughout the country.
Calling for suitable action by the police, IMA president Rajesh Trivedi and secretary Kamal Jain said the assault on the doctor was unjustified and unwarranted. The highlighted the need of fair and free social atmosphere for best treatment for the patients. They said that they would also submit a memorandum to the district collector and police commissioner on Monday in this context.
